Kerry| Founder

Kerry Spence is one of California’s first paralegals, receiving her American Bar Association approved certificate from the University of San Diego in 1977. Originally, paralegals who worked directly for the people were called independent paralegals, but they are now called Legal Document Assistants (LDAs). LDAs work for you to help create the documents that capture the substance of your estate plan. You call the shots and are always in charge. LDAs are highly trained in legal procedures so they are the ideal guide for your estate planning.

Kerry was born and raised in Wyoming, and is the daughter of legendary trial lawyer, Gerry Spence. She started attending court with her father at the age of 8 and was later trained by her father while working at his law firm. Her early lessons taught her to help the people and approach the law with compassion. Kerry left her father’s firm to establish her paralegal practice in Marin County, California where she worked for some of Northern California’s most respected trial attorneys, specializing in civil litigation and document management.

Kerry is widely recognized as a pioneer and leader

Kerry is widely recognized as a pioneer and leader in the paralegal profession. She was profiled in the book written by Sheri Estrin, Where Do I Go From Here?, in the chapter entitled Paralegal Role Models. Kerry was an assistant professor for over 20 years at the Sonoma State Paralegal Program where she taught How to Operate a Successful Paralegal/LDA Business, sharing her experiences as a seasoned business owner. Kerry is a member of California Association of Legal Document Assistants (CALDA) and is on their advisory council.

compassion, affordability and simplicity

Kerry has spent over half her life working in our legal system for attorneys and self-represented consumers. She developed the Kerry Spence Method of Compassionate Law with a three-pronged approach of compassion, affordability and simplicity as her personal response to the access to justice crisis. This earned her the gratitude of her clients and the respect of her father who said, “You are a brave one, Kerry, and you have so much to be proud of. I am honored to be your father. You are my role model.”

Kerry has been in private practice for more than 40 years, providing services to the public and to attorneys. She currently operates People’s Legal Docs, Inc. and The Paralegal Offices of Kerry Spence. Kerry writes about, and lectures state-wide on, affordable legal access issues and solutions.

Srijana Photo
Srijana | Project Director

Srijana Dhakhwa was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, into a family of crystal carvers. Her calm, spiritual temperament has a strong positive effect on her workmates, and also on our clients. They are reassured by the combination of a sweet voice and a brilliant mind. She is highly skilled in all aspects of our estate planning business, and is what we affectionately call geeky smart. These are the shining attributes that convinced us she would be the right person to direct your estate planning work.

Srijana received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and went on to Graduate Studies in Economics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Srijana’s real calling is in helping the people. After a few years of work doing market research for technology firms, she got a paralegal certificate from American Bar Associated approved San Francisco State University, and started working for the people. Srijana says that this work gives her immense satisfaction.

Srijana likes working for People’s Legal Docs, because we allow her the opportunity to follow her passion. She likes that we give people a powerful alternative to going to an attorney for estate planning. She likes that our clients drive the process, and that we work with our clients to help them reach their goals. She originally worked for estate plan attorneys, where the attorneys are the ones who do the directing, but make you do all the work. She knows how our service differs from the traditional, partial service model.

Srijana believes People’s Legal Docs tries to make estate planning simple, in the sense that all the work is done for them from the beginning to the end. As she explains it; “Our clients are not faced with a “black hole” of technical documents that they have to figure out, fill out and sign, not knowing if they are doing it right. Instead, our clients are the decision makers who are involved throughout the process. We make sure that they are informed of what is going on, every step of the way. We keep everything easy for them so there is no stress in our estate planning process. The real difference is that People’s Legal Docs is full service from start to finish!”

Bianca Photo
Bianca | Document Specialist

Bianca Beggs was born and raised here in Marin County. We found that Bianca’s attention to detail, and her sharp focus on the benefit of our clients, made her the ideal candidate to produce your estate plan documents. Bianca is a Millennial – born in our high technology era, and is super smart. She grew up with computers and apps so she has a very short learning curve with new technologies. Ironically, she types so fast, our cloud based docs have a tough time keeping up with her.

Bianca is currently working on a Bachelor’s degree in sociology at the University of California in Berkeley, and will graduate in December 2016. She also earned a degree from Butte College in Social and Behavioral Science. Bianca previously worked for a law firm helping clients with insurance claims against big institutions. She experienced the high levels of stress inherent in the attorney firm business model, and saw the toll it took on her clients.

Bianca was drawn to People’s Legal Docs because of the lack of stress in our environment. She saw how we work hard to make complex matters simple for the client, and found that she enjoyed the work. She likes the wording of our documents that are easy for anyone to understand. It makes her feel good that we organize our documents, procedures and technology to make everything simple; both for us and for our clients. Organization plus planning equals simplicity.

Bianca has a passion for helping people and is a firm believer in the power of education, both for herself and others. Through a service program at U.C. Berkeley, she mentors elementary school children where she encourages them to set academic and personal goals, and acts as a powerful role model for them. We are all very proud of Bianca!

Grant Photo
Grant | Technology & Media

Grant Keller is our tech safety-net guy. He developed our website, took most of our pictures, and produces our wonderful videos. Our process involves highly sensitive financial information that has to pass safely through the Internet, so we must use state of the art protection and cutting edge software tools. With this technology, we keep all your data safe in a cloud based vault, always backed up, always secure. That requires we use a full time tech wizard to make your estate plan flow smoothly. Grant, a member of Mensa, makes this all happen for you.

Grant was born in Venice, a southern California seaside town. He grew up surrounded by artists, poets and aerospace workers who heavily influenced his intellectual development. He learned early to wed art with technology. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Loyola Marymount University, and a Master’s degree in Systems Architecture and Engineering from the University of Southern California. He devoted much of his aerospace career to research and development projects, refining his understanding of technology and how to use it to produce elegant solutions to difficult questions. He even got to be a rocket scientist for a while.

Grant’s greatest challenge was to make his engineering solutions as artistically beautiful as they were technologically advanced, the hallmark of elegant solutions. Grant is using decades of engineering experience to help Kerry, Srijana and Bianca refine our estate planning processes. He is skilled in applying Microsoft Office 365 and SharePoint technologies to our refinement process, and in adapting government and industry developed process improvement techniques. He also writes the occasional haiku to spice up our website.

Grant uses the Adobe Creative Suite of products to create and produce videos that explain the essential aspects of estate planning. It is our hope that these videos will answer some of your questions, and deepen your understanding of our processes. He also uses these tools to edit and enhance photographs for your website viewing enjoyment. We can always tell when Grant is working on something. He gets that special glint in his eyes.
